iPhone 6 and Google Voice

Screen Shot 2015-03-04 at 6.17.44 PMI’ve been a Google Voice user since they offered it after buying out Grand Central in 2007. The cool thing is that I have EVERY voicemail that I’ve received since using it. Right now – that’s nearly 7000 voicemails archived!

In addition to being able to search/find any voicemail via the Google Voice app, I can also do it from any web browser. PLUS – I can download the voicemails in MP3 form or share them out – or even embed them in my website.

With an iPhone or any phone that you want the voicemail to forward, there are a set of instructions for activating your phone and then entering a code in the phone to setup the conditional forwarding.

Screen Shot 2015-03-04 at 4.02.23 PMThe iPhone 6 and AT&T apparently have an issue. Even when correctly dialing the conditional forwarding code, ALL calls are sent staight to Google Voice. That’s not what I want. If you disable call forwaring in Settings … Phone … Fowarding, then the voicemails go straight back to visual voicemail. The problem with visual voicemail is that you are limited on the number you can keep and you can’t share or download, etc.

Anyway, thanks to Matthew B Nelson on the Google Product Forums, there is a workaround to the iPhone6 ATT Google Voice issue.

  1. Simply take your SIM card out of your iPhone 6, put it in an iPhone and dial the command.
  2. This sets the forwarding command to the SIM card.
  3. Then simply swap the SIM card back to your iPhone 6 and PRESTO!

Now I have my iPhone6 working with Google Voice just like before!

Additional Notes:

Just in case you want the addtional Conditional Call Forwarding (CCF) codes for AT&T – here they are:

*004*<phone number>#
enables all forms of CCF at once, but currently, it doesn’t work on the iPhone 6, so use the individual commands instead:

*61*<phone number>#
is the GSM code that only activates conditional call forwarding if not answered.

*67*<phone number>#
is the GSM code that only activates conditional call forwarding if busy.

*62*<phone number>#
is the GSM code that only activates conditional call forwarding if no service.

##004#
disables all forms of call forwarding.
